What is a Wellbeing Coordinator and how can you appoint someone to the position at your club?
The Wellbeing Coordinator exists to support the mental health and wellbeing of the club’s community members with an empathetic, caring and strategic approach. The role is responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of initiatives (e.g., educational sessions, referral pathways) that promote wellbeing through establishing a strategic Wellbeing Program.

Willaston FC wellbeing coordinator Karen McColl says the position is vital to providing support for those at the club.
“It can actually take pressure off the coaches and coaching staff in terms of skills they might not necessarily have,” she said.
“They might be really good at teaching and developing but some of those softer skills they might struggle with, so then they have a support person who they can go to and get upskilled and learn as well.”
Lifechanging circumstances happen at clubs all the time and Karen says it’s important to have a framework in place so people know who to go in those instances.
“Having someone in a role like that is preparedness for anything that can [happen] … so having a coordinator role and a framework in place is really key to moving through (the situation) quicker and also providing support for people who might not necessarily have those skills.”
